Contained in this publication are essays discussing all the artistic disciplines Józef Hecht was active in. It features over eighty reproductions of his works from Polish and foreign collections, both public and private. Katarzyna Kulpińska’s opening essay is dedicated to Hecht as a printmaker, and is followed by Aneta Pawłowska’s analysis of his paintings in relation to the changes occurring in the art of the time, while Łukasz Żuchowski’s text takes as its subject matter Hecht’s sculptural achievements. Included in the book is also christi- na Weyl’s essay discussing Hecht’s influence on the activities undertaken in Atelier 17, as well as Irmina Gadowska’s paper presenting the artist’s relations with his home town, Łódź. Alongside the essays examining Hecht’s oeuvre, this volume embraces a chronology of his life and bibliography.
The publication has been made possible by the financial support and expert assistance provided by many institutions and private persons. our deepest gratitude goes to the PZU Foundation, POLONIKA Institute, Institute of Art History at the university of Łódź, POLIN Museum, Musée du Dessin et de l’estampe originale in Gravelines, Dolan/Maxwell Gallery, and to collector Maxfield Shea for his ongoing support for our research.
